Bethune Confronts the Horrors of the Spanish Civil War
In February 1937 Bethune along with Hazen Sise and Tom Worsley, members of his blood transfusion team, drove an ambulance loaded with blood supplies south from Valencia. Their destination was the city of Malaga, but before they could reach it the city fell to fascist forces. Leaving Almeria, they drove west along the coastal road, where they encountered hordes of terrified refugees who were fleeing the pursuing fascists. After Bethune and his men had rescued several ambulance loads of exhausted women and children and ferried them to Almeria, the ambulance broke down and they had to have it repaired. Then began a night of horror that Bethune would never forget.
